So before your trip, hit the gym as often as you can
No need to be Mr muscle but just look like someone who works out in general
Get a nice haircut and a shave or a trim
And get yourself some nice vacation clothes

Once all that is done you can then do what you were planning on doing which is keep to the public areas
As long as you’re friendly and willing to chat with people you can break the ice by asking questions like “where did you get that drink” or things like that
