System failure indeed... When asked about what the Airline industry has turned into and how it's perceived after the debacle with their Airlines, the CEO of United had this to say:

"The industry is getting a black eye..."
- said the United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz
"-system failure-"
- Munoz regarded the industry...
How can it not be a system failure when the entire industry only caters to themselves - like a dictatorship only caters to the people in charge of the country... You can't be surprised when they take you out of your seat and beat you up for not complying with their demands!

I really think airlines should cease the practice of overbooking outright just voluntarily instead of increasing the penalty cost when more than the anticipated number of passengers show up.
They're trying to maximize revenue using statistics and probability, but any time they're overbooked, even without a disastrous incident like this, it tends to piss people off, and all for like an 5-10% increase in revenue.
If they avoided that practice, they might end up with a small percentage of empty seats and have to charge slightly more per ticket, but that'd probably make passengers much happier and streamline the entire process in ways that has them returning as loyal customers.
I think the statistical model is oversimplified when it overlooks customer satisfaction.
Like imagine shorter lines checking in and boarding, having a small percentage of free seats on the plane you could potentially move to if you don't like yours, being able to be situated close to your family without having to sit somewhere completely else, and never having to deal with the hassles of overbooking. That's worth like a 5-10% extra cost per ticket, right? I think so.
I hate flying. I was profiled too many times, I will not give them the satisfaction to profile me, or give the airline industry my money. if I want to goto a white sandy beach, I will jump in my car and drive to AC.
Good write up.
