Video shows Ukrainian air power and Javelins bombing a Russian Tank platoon as it tried to move into a town near Kyiv in BROAD DAYLIGHT like a bunch of idiots. The Russians took heavy losses, and the Ukrainians even captured and commandeered several Russian tanks.

Fox News reported via Ukrainian government, over 80 russian helicopters shot down and 30-something russian fixed wing aircraft/jets downed. That's more than 10% of the entire Russian Air Force.

To be fair it was not an entire platoon of tanks, it’s was mainly BTR types and I think 2 tanks.

Also this is where things such as training and passion in defending your homeland come in to it.

it also highlights where the Russians have not fully learnt combined arms, everyone expected combined arms, then got a half arsed attack.

Added to this the British have been training the Ukrainian military since independence and officially since 2015, training included exactly what is happening in urban environment, use of Javelin and anti air weapons.

the result is Russia falls back on what worked in WW2

Ukrainians now reporting over 300 Russian tanks destroyed, 1100 APCs destroyed, and 12, 000 Russian troops dead. that's way more casualties than the USA suffered in 20 years in Iraq and Afghanistan. This Russian invasion is a suicide mission.

So a number of years back I used to play a game called world of tanks. I heard reports of Russian soldiers using that game as a substitute for training.

I was not among the best of players but I was at the competitive level. And there was a Russian group (Russian nationals living in North America) they had a reputation of bumrushing as did the entirety of the Russian server.

In short I am not surprised

rush is almost never the right thing to do in an RTS game unless you already know you're way ahead of the defender. LIke I can rush in StarCraft or Age of Empires III because I'm Code S and there's a good chance my opponent sucks, so I'll win anyway. But if it's even skill vs even skill, rushing almost never works.

That wasn't my point.
I meant that the Russians may see this as a "game" but how an actual tank operates is vastly different in the real world.

Tanks are a far more formidable weapon in a defensive role than an offensive role. Simply because it's harder to hide the weak hull of a tank when you are fighting on the move

Makes you wonder if someone high up in the command chain is sabotaging the invasion. Perhaps they're not errors but deliberate bad orders so Putin loses and someone else can step in.

I would take Ukrainian claims with a grain of salt, and Russian claims with an even bigger grain of salt. The actual numbers that we can confirm are roughly half of what Ukraine claims in terms of KIA, and combined KIA, wounded, captured, and deserted is pretty close to Ukraine's KIA claims. You may have also noticed that nobody talks about Ukraine's military and paramilitary losses on this subject, either. The most consistent/plausible estimates put it around 1/3 that of Russia, but they are also capturing a large number of armored vehicles to presumably use against them.

For starters, the vast majority of Russia's military are not professional soldiers; they are conscripts. They do have a token number of "serious" soldiers, but it's nowhere near enough to make a difference in a major war. You can't find a single conflict in history in which unmotivated conscripts outperform professionals on a man-for-man basis, and they're even at a disadvantage against cornered civilian insurgents with everything to lose. Russian military doctrine is also basically unchanged from the 1940s, treating infantry and armor as expendable bullet sponges while artillery is where their firepower is emphasized, and the air force is absent. This is especially evident with the shelling of cities. Probably the single most baffling misstep though, is that Russia didn't knock out Ukraine's airfields early, and their MOUT training seams to be basically nonexistent. While you'd think the country that fought in Stalingrad and lost tens of thousands of planes to the Luftwaffe would've learned that lesson long ago, it appears as though not having fought a major war against a near peer threat since 1945 hasn't been good for them.

Another side of the story that I've yet to see mentioned is friendly fire incidents. With two countries that are using basically identical equipment with only reflector tape to differentiate themselves, there have certainly been lots of friendly fire casualties probably on both sides.
