@CandiceK Chris Rock said "Jada Pinkett Smith, G. I. Jane 2. Can't wait to see it". He was making a reference her haircut for a cheap laugh. I don't think he knew she had alopecia. Will Smith was laughing when the camera panned to him then it panned to her and she wasn't laughing and she didn't seem to appreciate the joke. Then as you hear Chris Rock say "uh-oh" and then you see Smith climbing the steps. Will Smith approaches and throws a slap that in my opinion appears as though he pulled. I think that's why some say it was stayed. I would have thought it to till Will returns to his seat. And when Rock tells him it was just a joke Will Smith says "keep my wife's name out your your f***ing mouth" the second time in an attempt to over shout Rock. this is why I don't think it was staged. Rock looked visibly shaken after that. He tried to keep it moving by saying " that was the greatest night in the history of television" to smooth things over and it did get a small laugh from the crowd. But still shaken he fumbled announcing the next category. Keep in mind he's a comedian and is used to hecklers. I think the reason he didn't act rattled from the start is I don't think he expected expected Will to respond that way I don't think anyone did.

Thanks for explaining that. All I know is, that was a pretty wimpy slap. If he was going to assault Rock, he should of just punched his lights out. But having said that, if Rock pressed charges, he would be in the right. Heck, I know a guy who was arrested for throwing a beer at a girl in a bar. Not the glass or bottle, but just the beer. It was assault.
But in the grand scheme of things, I'm not going to lose any sleep over what two millionaires do to each other on the stage at a stupid award ceremony.

When I heard the unedited version and he loudly shouted a couple F-bombs to talk over Chris who was trying to explain it was just a joke. He had no malicious intent. I was mentally transported back to the MTV music awards that Chris Rock was hosting. And Will Smith proudly accepted the award and said he didn't cuss in his music (unlike most hip hop artists) and he still won awards.
