It's a double-edged sword. The public needs to be informed about the ongoing potential danger, but many serial killers also feed off the attention. Thus possibly making them more active. They also tend to be extremely intelligent. It's amazing how many documented serial killers have various forms of Ivy League ties (attended, graduated, offered a scholarship, etcetera).

i understand why making it public is a bad idea, but you have to let people know. if the detectives suck then at least the public was warned.

More importantly you will ruin someones life if you public announce they are a suspected serial killer.
It makes perfect sense to me if there is a serial killer on the loose, police, media etc should ALL be warning as many people as possible.
No, they're innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
