Personally, where I live, in elementary schools, there may be several ways to get in, (doors, small windows, etc) BUT it’s hard to do. You’d probably have to break glass, get in small access points, break the law already to get in, though an insane person with a weapon looking to cause mayhem would probably not be thwarted. But everything is locked - you have to be buzzed in or allowed in. A parent or kid could do it, but so far, I haven’t seen it much - maybe once or twice; or the kid gets in trouble for allowing someone in. It’s also hard to let someone “piggyback”. Most people going into the school have to do it through the main office, so anyone else going in without an ID will be in the office, and they have locked doors to the main part of the school. I’m not saying it would be impossible, but I am saying it’d be tougher.


Now a kid coming in with a gun is rare. We don’t have issues with gang activity, at least with middle or elementary school students, so I don’t think the schools do metal detectors. I think some require the kids to have clear backpacks, but that’s unusual.


In high school, we had overweight ex cops, and there were rumors of a few nondescript offices for storage of mild police riot gear. We also happened to have a few teachers and coaches who probably had concealed carry licenses. Most doors were locked, as I remember, until school was over. My guess is they probably moved the offices to a more better location after graduation and added more security, like what the elementary schools have.

It probably would but that would make schools more look like prisons and it would make pupils and probably parents as well uncomfortable sending their kids there.
It would destroy the image of school as safe place where kids develop from being kids to adults and make schools look like a military barrack.
On the other hand I know from Jewish schools in Germany that they actually work that way with having police officers controlling the parking lot to secure and there haven´t been no attack on them in recent years.
But because something like that would reduce the personal freedom of kids and it would be very costly Republicans will probably vote against it.
