I floated the idea of a "District Police Department" with some friends of mine. They wouldn't have city or county juristiction, their sole purpose would be to guard their schools in their district. They'd set up shop with at least 3 patrol memebers at each school and as long as a single person is inside that building they can't leave. They stay put and patrol the school grounds.

Then put metal detectors at all entrances, practice lockdown and evacuation drills just like fire and tornado drills.

Crack down on bullying. For the love of god and all that is holy, stop letting bullies bully, and hold the staff responsible for not getting a handle on it.

Then finally, allocate funds for counsellors and therapists, and fix the mental health crisis. Cause that's what this is. Its not a gun problem it's a mental health and crime problem.

Find out what's causing people to go postal and turn to crime and fix it. If we just go after the symptoms and not the disease, we'll never cure the sickness.

But back in the day, we had mental facilities that dedicated to helping and housing people with these mental illness, when they were opened we didn't have mass shootings like this.

Then they decided they didn't want to pay to help them, and closed a majority of them.

Now we got mental illness popping up in every aspect of our country. From schools, to work, restaurants, social media, media and even politics.

This is a good start. Reopen these facilities focus on mental health more.

Metal detectors as well that can catch these threats before they make it in the building.

Yes they should it would be the smart thing to do to have teachers and trained staff to have them but it's almost as though they want gun control so they chose not to do that. Thing is guns are not the problem and I don't believe people understand that. If there was a person with a huge knife trying to attack someone or yourself how will that person defend themselves? With a gun obviously. If you're a mom and your in your home with your kids and someone breaks in and tries to kill you with a knife how will you defend yourself? Specially a man that his strength is that much more than a women plus yes cops will get there but it might be too late. That would me more helpful long term, though not very likely. It's much more likely that nothing at all will be done. Like completely leaving the map and report that guy put together out, most mass shootings that don't involve drugs or gangs have nothing at all to do with schools, but happen in the workplace. That picture is going to look very messy as numbers for Corona virus start to come together, lots of people went bankrupt during that timeframe.

Anyway, I wouldn't be too hopeful of a rational response or reaction when simply hoping for people to not take advantage of people's pain, fear or apprehensions for their personal gain is setting the bar pretty high.

First thing the have to do is take down the 'Gun Free Zone' signs, and erect 'Armed Staff on the Premises' that will deter a lot of the spur of the moment spree shooters, then harden the schools so there are a limited number of access points which are constructed as Sally Ports to control entry and hold anyone with hostile intent and harden the classroom doors to resist hand gun and rifle fire.
If members of the staff want to be armed/concealed carry then give them the training to be effective with them and body armour to protect them and the choice of firearm,
And for those who say teachers should not be armed, I have news for them, a significant number already are, and they have been for a long time, when I lived in the US I was one of them. I concealed carried for over 5 years until I returned to the UK,
In those 5 years I put in more training time with fire arms than the majority of street cops, average twice a week, I paid for the range/training time and ammunition myself If I was going to carry the I was going to be proficient, and in those 5 years no one in the school that I taught at knew I was carrying, I never drew what I was carrying, but it was there if needed.

This is conjecture, unless you have data. Where's your data? What is "a significant number" as you claim? There are 2,940, 000 teacher in K- middle and junior high, plus approximately another million in high school, according to weareteachers. com. How many of them are armed?

Whenever teachers are surveyed, anywhere for 75% to 95% say they do NOT want to be armed, but the ALL want gun control.

Regulations are a means of control, which you agree to accept in EVERY walk of your life, but how dare it occur when it comes to guns, huh? Very difficult for you guys. But most shooters seem to want to be killed - the latest one seemed to go out with that attitude.
Where I am schools are very open structures easily entered. Is that the case in the US? Perhaps a better approach would be to have high fences and to channel traffic through a single point that could be monitored. Easy to pick up adults with guns but kiddies with guns would probably get through.

Teachers are woefully underpaid. Most are liberals so they wouldn't want a gun anyway. Plus, God forbid that a student somehow gets a teacher's gun. Cops have them taken from them and they're presumably trained.

That said, I think if a teacher WANTED to be armed, it should be allowed. There should even be signs posted that the staff may be armed. And there should be a full-time officer on campus who's ready to put some holes in a little punk ass.

I wouldn’t be against allowing school staff to carry concealed weapons on grounds. However, relatively few people maintain a concealed carry license and hiring armed security on an ongoing basis probably isn’t in the budget for the vast majority of school districts. They’re usually strapped for cash. I think states ought to start replacing, as they can afford it, the doors on classrooms with bullet resistant security doors that can be barred from the inside. That way, if a shooter is in the building, staff can bar the doors and hunker down until help arrives. It’s not a perfect solution but it would go a long way towards reducing casualties.

6% of the population has a carry license, which likely translates accordingly to school staff. That’s entirely inadequate. Not to mention those numbers are skewed toward rural areas and not the urban population centers. System wide physical security measures would be far more effective than relying on one or two staff members who may not be in a position to or are too afraid to confront an active shooter. The reinforced doors would save more lives……but again I’m not against letting staff have their weapons. It’s a good secondary line of defense.

Yes, schools have wasted lots of Covid money on air filtration systems and plexiglass partitions and other ridiculous things. They could have spent it on stipends for teachers that would be willing to pack a gun. When I worked in a K-12 system I would have signed up for that.

I made it through 13 years of school and never ONCE had to worry about such shit! The worst offense we ever had in school was in high school when someone dropped a cherry bomb in the toilet and it destroyed the toilet and flooded the bathroom!!

I work on a school and believe me when I say that most teachers don't want a gun and to be perfectly honest couldn't handle a gun. Every week teachers are assaulted in this country by students and schools refuse to protect them, how can teachers be expected to stop an active shooter when they can't even protect themselves.
