Why do you think North Carolina and Tennessee got the brunt of the damage of Helene instead of Florida where it made landfall as a Cat 4 storm?

As a lifelong resident of both Tennessee and NC, usually when we get any remnants of a hurricane or tropical storm, it fizzles out quickly, but it looks like this time we took a more direct hit. Usually hurricanes or tropical storms aren't this devastating this far inland. we're we just not prepared?
