It's nothing to do with generations, and everything to do with stupid people wanting to copy meaningless "trends" for fame and ad revenue.

As for that case in particular - they are a particular kind of fucked as not only was it catfish and bait with intent, but they did it to a soldier.

You can be certain each and every one of those people is going to find their life falling off a cliff from here on out. While the military will not kill them, it can take away every opportunity in their life they ever hoped for.
