2 of the 4 best intensity models and the best track model all have Melissa hitting Jamaica as a very slow-moving Category 4 or 5 hurricane. It parks the storm over the island for 4 to 6 days with torrential rains and 130+mph winds pretty much the entire time.
This will be their worst disaster since Gilbert if this verifies.

Update: I guess we all know what happened now. Tie for strongest Atlantic Basin landfall on record and third place all time for intensity of any hurricane even over water.

For sure. I hate when these poor islands get nailed.
I doubt Atlantic hurricanes really get any stronger than Melissa got at maximum intensity. It did some things we've never seen in the satellite era. It built clouds into the Stratosphere and it had the world record core eye temperature and it had subsidence in the eye from the stratosphere to the surface, which has been theorized but never observed. I'ts bordering on a new type of cyclone never seen before.
