I'm not saying this is a good idea since I don't know the full context but if you've been together eight years than I think you should consider proposing. I don't know if you two are the type that want to get married or if you prefer the term partners or something and don't want the government in your love life which is fair but in my opinion if you've loved her for almost a decade, I think it's time to consider taking the next step.
