I too was depressed I used to cut myself but it never helped. I felt trapped and alone like noone understood me. No one ever listened. When I tried talking to people they ignore what I said and accused me of being paranoid. One day I almost died I drunk a lot of liqour. They had to revive me. When i woke up at a hospital I felt worse. That day I realized that noone is going to take care of me but myself. I started running and exercising. I found out that are body creates cortezel. Its a faty acid that is linked to depression and bad heart conditions. Intense exercising sweats it out not only that it creates a feeling of well being sortve like masterbateing. But except you sweat all those chemicals out of your body. Another thing was i added vitamin B to my diet. Vitamin B may lower your chances of being depressed it is found in bananas do some research on it. Its no wonder why monkeys look happy. Two last things to ad always eat breakfast nomatter what because its the most important meal of the day and get plenty of rest at least 7 hours.

You acknowledge that harming yourself just makes things worse, which is a good step !
If you're the same as I was, and that you find harming yourself is sort of like getting all your emotions out your brain.. One try and find another outlet to let those thoughts out.
I know it isn't for everyone, but I found writing everything down so so helpful.. Even if you aren't a pen and paper kind of person, even just writing it all out on your notes on your phone can really help!
