Is this an American thing to do or does it only happen on screen?
Do you say 'bye' before you hang up the phone?
Is this an American thing to do or does it only happen on screen?
Yeah, I do. Even the TCP protocol says BYE (actually, that not true, TCP says FIN and the other party says ACK.), or at least the SIP protocol legitimately ends its connection with BYE at the end.
Really.

I had a feeling that graph would totally fall apart.
I usually go with an "Alright man/bro, see ya" with my guy friends xD But if it's girl friends, or someone else, I go with a bye, I think it's a little disrespectful not to say anything, just hung up, it gives the impression that you didn't wanna talk with them.
Thanks for the MHO!
I always say bye (or some variant) before hanging up, unless I'm super angry and just rage quit the conversation. I've only done that twice, though. :P
When I was a kid, my dad told me that there's some kind of superstition in Hollywood about it. Like saying "bye" or anything similar on a phone conversation is supposed to be bad luck. I have no idea if he was just making stuff up or not, though, haha.
Of course it's a must! I always say bye, goodbye, and goodnight followed by I love you. I mean it's basically installed into my head to say it now I even say i love you to my friends every now and agian.
The only time I don't say goodby and just end a conversation is when I'm texting someone and more often than not the conversation really didn't end I just never replied,
Yes I do.. But my mum lol she just doesn't say bye over the phone.. When she is done she just says "alright goun" (child in Khmer) and then hangs up.. But when she is in a pissed off mood she will just hang up half way of the conversation and you just happen to still be talking till you realise there is an end dial tone lol and your just thinking "ferk mum really! Really!" 😒
omg lol I hate it when they do that!
I know It's so freaking annoying. 😩😫 but hey mum is mum so lol
Its so hard not to say bye!! (x
You never know if they know you're about to click and I don't want to be rude and hang up when they decide to say something else. Haha I always have to say bye. If I hang up on them saying something, YOU HEARD ME SAY BYE!!! (:

Roflmao what video is this
I can't stop watching... oh the horror! Do you do the moves too?
Right onnnnnn
There is very little that's realistic about American television, including this. Everyone I know says something before they hang up. I usually say "See ya", "bye", "see ya when I get there", or something like that.
I have no idea why they do it that way on television and movies. Except that people in Hollywood live in their own little fantasy world. I think most of them really believe that the whole world is a stage and all the people are make-believe.
Actually some people on here admit to (sometimes) not saying bye (or something similar I presume) before hanging up. Maybe they secretly are Hollywood writers xD
I'm not sure if I've ever heard anyone not say something. If it's not bye then there is something that signifies the call is over. In business it's common to say "have a nice day". For some reason I never like that, maybe because it always seems phoney and insincere. With me in business it usually ends something like:
"Is there anything else?"
"No, that's all"
"OK thanks"
click
The thanks basically serves as a bye.
I bawk like a chicken.
I've noticed this in movies; it's usually when someone is in trouble or really upset or ticked off. I was just watching Limitless again, and that there was no "bye." Which sounded odd to me, even if he was super angry and stressed.
My family says goodbye on the phone, even if we're angry. Only time we don't is when we're kicked offline or when we text. Otherwise, it's in there.
Would you have noticed it if I hadn't asked this question?
Actually, I noticed it a few days ago probably before you wrote this. I was using the stationary bike; I watch a lot of DVD's when I'm biking to pass the time. I noticed your question partly because I had been reminded that they don't often say goodbye in phone conversations.
Well in the TV shows and movies they may have just been trying to be funny or what not. Most people here actually do say good bye or just bye. I typically say that. Sometimes in my personal experience I might say "I'll talk to you later." Then the other person may say "Alright bye." Then I'll say "Alright." Sometimes I may not say bye then, but usually I do say bye.
They do that in non-funny TV shows too like it's a normal thing to do because the people never get upset. It seems so weird and kind of rude to me. But it's good to know that real people everywhere don't actually do that.
Oh. Yeah it is kind of rude. It's weird to me if people don't say bye. Like how am I supposed to know you're done talking? Even when I get "cut off" (when my phone loses a signal and I lose the call) I still call back and then if we don't have anything left to say then say bye.
lol American TV shows makes people around the world really question the social etiquettes in the US xD
What part of the USA we are talking about makes a difference too probably. And then the media is it's own thing. I mean they are liable to show you anything... except sexual stuff. The USA media doesn't like sexual stuff as much as other countries, which I guess it's not even a matter of liking but more a matter of accepting. Violence is fair game though. USA media doesn't mind showing that. Rudeness may play a role in that. I might not watch enough TV shows because I haven't noticed really. I know if you watch those "reality" TV shows you'll probably get plenty of rudeness.
Depends on who I'm talking too it's just automatic. If I'm talking to a girl I'll say bye, if it's a guy I'll say "alright" or "ard". Never really thought about it 0.0
you just say alright and hang up? what if your friend wants to say something after you said alright? has anyone ever called again?
I do both.
oddly enough, I get annoyed when others hang up without saying goodbye first.
o__O ok
Yes I always say bye, I think it is rude to just hang up the phone in the way you describe it is done in programmes and movies.
I usually say "bye" and an extra "love ya" if its my family/close friend/so, but i'm not American so...
yeah of course. in a lot of movies and tv shows they don't even bother saying bye. i've noticed it too. it's weird lol
I always make a closing statement. Be it 'bye', take it easy, or 'farewell my dearest'. I don't just hang up. ;-)
Business stuff I always say "Bye."
Family/friends always "Bye, love you!"
My aunt used to never say bye though. She'd usually just hang up.
lol my relatives tend to say bye at least 3 times before finally hanging up. your aunt is ice cold xD
Yes I say bye but I mad add a word or a few along with it.
"Okay, bye."
"Alright (y), bye."
"Talk to you later, bye."
"Bye."
"Adios."
Everytime baby. To meh, it means the same as farewell and wish u luck. It's kinda rude without saying bai to the other person before u hung up. It's like, they juz hung up on u without thinken that the conversation hasn't ended yet.
Yea I dont always. Depends who's on the other end... but i don't recommend it
lol!
I've noticed that too! It's hilarious! Especially in the vampire diaries haha xP
I always say bye lol
Yes! Finally someone noticed this too xD I also noticed they do it in Supernatural because they tend to call each other a lot. I wonder if they did it in older TV shows too...
@hapyshiny LOL they always do it!!!
Most of the time.
If I don't I will say, "later" or "take care".
Both. I do, but lots of people don't. Just a force of habit for me.
I always say bye. I hate when people don't lol! I'm like, "Oh.." and left wanting more like I need to call back just to properly end the damn call.
You've met people who don't say bye? :O
Actually one of my brothers does that to me sometimes. I'm like, "Dude.. say bye next time" lol.
Sometimes I say bye.
Ussualy I say " Okay , Imma have to let you go " and it confuses the eff out of my mom since English isn't her first language.
Yeah I say bye and I'm American. I've noticed that about our shows too and it pisses me off
