Perhaps he does it to distance himself from you because there is a timer on it and he is trying to protect himself against the loss he will feel when its over.
Its obviously a very difficult situation to be in but the fact of the matter is that if he is going away and it is going to end because of that and the purpose of you being together is to enjoy the time you have, then you should do that, there will be time for grieving later, if you dont or can't enjoy the time you have then what is the point in any of it?
Enjoy today it won't come again.
Few high school relationships survive graduation. You should both date other people when he is away.

I would start with communicating that is not something people should joke about. It can be read in many different ways. It might be a joke to him, it might not. It creates too much of a blurred boundary that it needs to be discussed and defined.
Tell him it hurts your feelings and there's some things you don't joke about.
Why not talk to HIM about it instead of asking us. If he won’t level with you then move on.
Next time he mentions it, just tell him your sick of hearing about, so do you want to break up now and stop wasting each others time?
He might have already decided that he's making a clean break with college and isn't looking to continue the relationship
that’s not a good sign…
