Why does he joke about breaking up?

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 3 years now. Recently, he’s been joking about breaking up.
For example, he just asked me “are we getting a divorce?” I shook my head no, and he replied “damnit”
Whenever I ask him if he wants to be with me, he always says yes. Any ideas why he jokes about this? It’s not fucking funny.

He’s also looking to enlist in the Army. He asked me “if I broke up with you, would you take care of my dogs when I’m gone?”

Yes, multiple times.
I just confronted him about it tonight... I wasn’t mad or anything just asked him why he keeps bringing it up. His response was “I don’t know” and denied doing it all the time.
Literally he made it seem so real the other week I started packing my things to move out (because I seriously thought he wanted me to). Then he got sad and told me he wanted to be with me and asked me to promise him I wouldn’t leave him and took me out to dinner etc. I thought after all that maybe he’d be more sensitive about it.
Then I’m sitting on the bed doing a last minute school assignment and he comes in to go to bed. He says “are you done bitching now?” Makes me feel like he couldn’t care less that it bothers me.
