I won't convert for him?

I was dating a guy for 6 months and he knew I was a Christian when we were dating. I had known the guy for 6 years before dating him. We had an amazing valentines day but 11 days after he dumped me because I wouldn't convert to catholicism for him. I love him and want to be with him but giving up my Christianity isn't an option. I later found out it's his mom who disapproves of the difference. He broke up with me only to ask for another chance 2 weeks later since then he has left me questioning what is going on. We still text and he claims to unconditionally love me and miss me but no actions have been made. I am lost as to if it's reasonable to ask him to defy his mom and choose me. I am tired of trying to sell him on the idea of us working. Is it even possible that a relationship could work if he has to defy his mom's wishes?

I do think Catholics are Christians it's his family that doesn't. I am a firm believer that as long as you have similar underlying values it can work.
