Can't get over my ex 'boyfriend'?

We were together for nearly 2 years, but we were not in fact boyfriend/girlfriend. He never called me his girlfriend, but everyone else, his friends and family regarded us as a couple. Being in a committed relationship with him was my fondest wish, and there is nothing I wouldn't do for him, but he didn't want that. Anyway, we broke up 6 months ago, and I was heartbroken. We're still friends though. I got severely depressed and still am 6 months later. I tried to start seeing someone else, but it doesn't help. I got even more depressed. It feels like my life is over, and I lost all motivation to do anything at all. Is there any hope for me to ever have any sort of happiness in my life?

Instead of blaming yourself and wondering why... try to learn from what happened. The first thing you need to understand is that you are completely in charge of your own happiness. I mean, when someone comes into your life, it should be that they are adding to pre-existing happiness, not bringing happiness to an unhappy life. So, instead of seeking validation from others, look for yourself and appreciate the good in you. This is your opportunity to get to know yourself and really connect with your values and thoughts. Use this chance to assess these. And remember, don’t go looking for love just yet. It'll come along, and when it does, you’ll be ready for it. Live your life.

So was this just a one sided relationship? You thought you were dating but actually weren't?

We were living together for a year and together for two years. I was assuming it meant something, but apparently I was wrong.
