Boyfriend broke up with with me over me lying about drinking and thought I perhaps may have cheated, what was his real reason why he wanted to break?

Your ex sounds like an unstable man who needs to sort some things out in his life. Why would you get together with a man who has domestic violence charges against him? Please do a background check on your potential future partners before going on a date with them.

“he didn't want to hurt me“ - this is a huge red flag which you seem to have ignored. No decent man would want to hurt their partner (assuming he is talking about physically hurting you) even when there is a heated argument going on. Give yourself space and time and don’t accept him if he wants to get back together later in the future. It looks like the man needs therapy for his controlling behavior and trust issues.

If he thinks he can't trust then he should have broken up with you.
His criminal past has nothing to do with him justifying breaking up with you.
Did you cheat?
Were you out drinking and lying about it?
Given the probability that he's prone to violence then it's a good thing he dumped you instead of doing something worse.
Let it go and stop lying to your partners.

Regardless of that, it doesn't sound like a good or healthy relationship for either of you. That's what I'd be looking at and focusing on. Violence, lying, drinking... not good.
