The significant part is not that he texted goodnight, but that you two started up chatting again.

How long were you together? My last ex and I were together for 2ish years. It took months for the communication to slow down even though we both knew neither of us were going to try to get back together with the other. Personally it made me feel worse. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything. But I don’t know what caused you to break up. That could also factor in.
