Should people seek counselling before getting a divorce?

Only if you have a GOOD professional marriage counselor. If you don't find a good one that can help you, don't bother going to them. Some therapists are real flakes and can't even relate to you guys because they've never experienced things such as what you two are going to.
Therapy might salvage your marriage, but only if you get the right kind of help.
Depends on the cause.
Something like cheating or physical/psychological abuse should probably warrant a direct divorce.
Any other situation I'd say give counseling a try first.
