Why would my narcissist ex say that what we had was going to end eventually, after he discarded me?

Please don’t say he discarded you, that word is so degrading and does nothing for your self esteem. You weren’t tossed out, you aren’t trash, it’s just a breakup. To more directly answer the question though, it sounds like he felt you were headed down this road for a while. It would’ve been better if he’d left you alone when he had that realization, but people can be selfish. Sorry this happened to you.

My first thought is because none of his relationships ever lasted. He always made sure of that.
That's nothing on you. It's his M. O. He does this with every one he's been using.

@sage2021 sounds like he’s noncommittal then. He may like the idea of a relationship and even be in one, but he’ll never be content. Always looking for something else, and that will get old eventually.
