1 thousand should be more than plenty to cover expenses and savings for your child (and only for the child). Spousal funds should be tapered if the partner is not in employment and child is not within education.

Financially you could go lower and provide evidence of this if you believe the funds won't be used in the way they should be for you child. You could set up a saving or investment account with monthly standing orders and have this make up part of your responsibilities for your child.

Your child is your responsibility but your spouse is no longer. A grace period is generous to help the ex get themselves sorted but should be tapered and not an incentive or means to not work and be an example as a parent.

I think if you earn $60,000 a year, your child support payments would be $5,000 a year. So 1/12th of your income goes towards child care. And I think spousal support is when the richer person pays the poorer person til both receive 50/50 payments equal to the number of years they were married, excluding inheritance money which is not divided with the ex in the case of divorce.
