What's it like to break up with someone?

I feel like it's going to suck. I hate to do it. It's killing me to do it, but it's killing me more to be in a relationship that I don't want to be in.

I honestly feel like a bad person for doing it, but I know I will feel worse leading them on any longer.

You’re right it sucks but let’s just take you out of the equation for a minute if you’re trying to save his feelings. You’re also doing him a favor as well because while it will hurt for both of you he can also find someone who would be happy with him assuming he’s a good person whose just not meant to be. So you’re not a bad person… a bad person is a coward who will cheat on someone and waste years of someone’s life when they could have found someone who does want to be with them.

As for you the same thing don’t waste your time on someone you don’t want to be with. Not everyone’s meant to be and it’s going to take grieving. It’s better to get this over and out of the way with NOW… rather then it lead to a nasty breakup later. Be respectful but blunt it’s best for BOTH of you.

It's terrible and something I avoided and didn't want to do. I tend to hold on too long. I got help from therapist at the time, because I was really too unskilled and weak to breakup. I did it twice in life and I don't like giving up on anything.

You have to focus on what's healthy and next. You could even start over fresh with them maybe. Like... you can take a part off your car... and replace it. Or you get a new car. Both are changes...

It's not the end of the world, it's the close of that chapter of the book. You then cleanup that section and process it and start fresh.

Else you drag the past molds into your present again, and that's worse.

If they aren’t bringing you happiness and only bringing you constant misery then breaking up with that person is the wise thing to do , but make sure you aren’t the reason , why it’s important to wear your partners’ shoes the same way you want them wearing yours, if they aren’t doing that for you , then dump them and realize you deserve better than that shit. I had a long distance relationship for 3 years with somebody that lived 1500 miles away. We were in love and had discussed marriage. It was apparent that due to external circumstances that there was no way that we would ever end up together. It took me 3 or 4 months before I called her on the phone late one Saturday and broke up with her. It was really hard to do and afterwards I wanted to call her back and tell her that I didn;t mean it but I toughed it out and resisted the urge to do it. When I got up the next day I was amazed at how different the world seemed. I was not sure what I was going to do next. My life all of a sudden had to be focused on something else that I did not know what it was at the time.

Breaking up is always difficult, it sucks to brake someone else's heart but it is what it is. 2 people need to be happy in the relationship to make it work. It sucks to do but there is no other option sadly. He will get over it eventually. Love doesn't come for free...
