Why do great leaders so frequently fail in their close connections?

I watched a YouTube of a Harvard educated teacher giving counsel about living. She might have been the most useful mentor I have ever had outside of religious innovation, and she was divorced at 54. Beautiful, kind, intelligent, hard working, honest, won awards for excellence, but divorced.

I think this is such a poignant observation, and sadly it's very common. The same traits that make someone a "great leader" or exceptionally accomplished often work against them in close, intimate relationships.
For example:
Leaders are frequently driven, decisive, high-achieving, and comfortable sacrificing short-term comfort for long-term goals. In careers, that's rewarded. In marriage or close partnerships, that same drive can look like emotional unavailability, constant prioritization of work/ambition over presence, or treating the relationship like a project to "optimize" rather than a living connection to nurture.
Many high-achievers (especially those from demanding fields like academia, business, or leadership roles) become masters at logic, problem-solving, and control — but relationships thrive on vulnerability, emotional attunement, patience with messiness, and sometimes just "being" instead of "doing." When emotions aren't logical, that skillset fails them.
Time and energy are finite. Pouring 60–80 hours/week into excellence leaves little for the slow, unglamorous work of repairing misunderstandings, listening without fixing, or simply showing up consistently in small ways. Over years, the partner feels like an afterthought.
And sometimes success brings power imbalances, temptations, or resentment (from either side) that erode trust.
The Harvard-educated woman you described sounds like an extraordinary person — and probably an amazing mentor precisely because she learned hard lessons through pain. Divorce doesn't erase her wisdom; it might even deepen it.
Greatness in one domain rarely translates directly to greatness in another. The most inspiring leaders often carry private regrets about what (or who) they sacrificed along the way. It's a reminder that no one is "complete" — we all have blind spots, and close relationships expose them mercilessly.
