Well, for me, it was quite easy. My first and only other relationship ended out of practicality.

He was a senior in high school and I was a junior. He was going off to school across the country, and I had a year left.

It just wasn’t going to work. So we did amicably. We both just knew it was the right thing to do.

A clear sign it was time to leave was realizing I was holding onto who they could be, who they used to be, or who I wished they were, rather than who they actually showed up as every day. I have been through that scenario several times.

When his effort and love no longer held meaning for me after going through problems, dragging it out made no sense. There is no need to emotionally exhaust a person if you aren't going to reciprocate.
