Can a dismissive-avoidant, manipulative ex truly change for someone else?

So I dated this man who was patient, kind, sweet, and charming at times but he would turn very cold, avoidant when I needed him the most. Do you think he can genuinely change, or will he eventually treat her the same way? I am having a very hard time letting him go.
