Sounds to me like your friends are kind of selfish. I think you need to tell them " You know it's not always about you right"?
I give, but i expect to get as well. And if i find myself giving but not getting back in return i stop giving. I can see how in a woman's mind that might seem like i just want attention but the reality is you're just not showing me any interest. So yeah, I'll just go through the motions until 1. You change your tune 2. A woman comes along that treats me like i deserve. Since clearly the first one doesn't.

Yes, but there are some guys who are genuinely about their word and won't do such a thing. If you find yourself in a situation like that, try to break it to him the best way possible that you can show attention but not be with him. He may be lonely and just needs a friend.

Not all guys are horny apes so yes it is definitely possible. Some guys just want to be laughed at because they don't ever get any attention, or just to be noticed and heard out. Entertaining for a laugh or for interest is just a way for them to get some attention, and does not always mean they want to be with you. It's not everybody though, some will abuse that and do both.

As I write this out I'm sitting next to a close friend that is a girl I have no intentions of trying to ever flirt with. We like each others attention and we laugh and joke and argue without falling for one another. It's possible to do, just hard to figure out the good guys from the players
