I've never really done it and prefer to hug. I think couples holding hands in public, especially young couples, are mostly just doing it as a superficial display of their relationship. They just want people to see that they have somebody. And I only ever really see young, affluent/well-to-do couples doing this, or young couples that you can see think they are both attractive or think they have an attractive partner.

I don't often see 'average' couples or people in their 40s or 50s doing this a whole lot. Not because they don't love each other but because they don't feel it's necessary to show off their relationship.

Think it depends on my mood.
Also my partner and their preference. I dated a girl for a long time and both of us were young and kinda scared, so holding hands in public made us uneasy.
But if they say they dont mind and we'll be walking a while I can appreciate holding hands, it's soothing
