There is no such thing as an alpha male or a beta male anymore, human society has mostly grown out of the mindset of heirarchies. Soon enough, there won't be much of a difference between human beings. The winner and loser way of categorizing men (or women sometimes) was and is a conservative way of thinking. It has no place in liberal societies.

Conservative behavior has been scientifically linked to the neurotransmitter serotonin by Dr. Helen Fisher. Serotonin and dopamine (another neurotransmitter) have a strong affect on human behavior.

Modern society is more affected by dopamine than serotonin (societies of the past were not), it is our modern reward based lifestyle that has given dopamine more control than serotonin, since dopamine increases every time we get a reward (food, porn, sex, music, movies, etc), the more we get these rewards which increase dopmine, the more dopamine compels us to seek that reward again (kind of like an addiction), this creates a loop that constantly increases dopamine.

Dopamine based behavior is in many ways the opposite of serotonin based behavior, (when serotonin increases, dopamine tends to decrease). Serotonin increases apathy, social phobia, reduces libido (dopamine increases empathy, open-mindedness, libido, among other things). These effects of serotonin are likely why societies of the past were judgmental of sexual expression, it is also why people of the societies of the past were more ruthless and cold-hearted, and it is also why people of the societies of the past were tribalistic, anyone outside of the tribe (or religion, ideology, nation, etc) was the enemy. Another thing to note is that every time our social status increases in our society, our serotonin levels increase as well (this plays an important role in the formation of heirarchies, from where the structure of alpha males and beta males comes from, this has been seen among animals as well)

Islamic countries are still like that, the US is mainly dominated by a serotonin based mindset (though not as much as Islamic countries are) mainly because of conservatives. This is why the US is so hostile to other countries, and heartless when exercising it's military power over others. It is also why people of the US are quite judgmental about sexual expression. Modern Europe is the only society that can be called liberal, modern Europeans mainly have a dopamine based mindset, and that is why they are quite accepting of sexual expression, open to accepting people of different religions, ideologies, nations. It is also why they are not ruthless like the US, despite their military power.

Some other effects linked to dopamine are increased ability to learn and increased creativity, which is likely why most scientists and other intellectuals tend to be liberal, it is also why liberal societies are more scientifically advanced. Since dopamine also increases empathy, it is likely why liberals are more supportive of women, minorities, etc.

Every person has serotonin and dopamine in them, it is just the levels of these neurotransmitter that wary, and whichever is more dominant seems to control behavior the most.

If you want to learn this in depth, you can use serotonin increasing medications and dopamine increasing medications on yourself, and observe how your behavior, your whole personality changes.

I think the term has become too loaded with preconceptions to be useful, from a linguistic POV.

But of course high status men still exist, but the truly "alpha" guys never SAY they're an "alpha male". People around them simply infer their social status from their actions, behavior, attitude and overall poise.

The reason it's gotten so hard to talk about "the status issue" is thus:

The signifier* has taken on a perceived meaning of its own. A meaning which was never an objective, inherent quality of the signified**.

By which I mean... alpha males do objectively exist in society the way they always have existed. But as soon as we use the term "alpha male", all these ancillary connotations and inferred meanings get projected onto the very concept itself.

This is partly a problem of cognition, but it's also a design flaw of language itself. By labelling something, you in some sense reduce its intrinsic nature down to an abstracted low resolution image. And then that image acts as a stand-in for the actual, objective phenomenon it's supposed to represent.

So it goes that when many people think "alpha male", the first image that comes to mind is the sort of basement dwelling 4chan losers who go round the internet TELLING WOMEN they're "alpha males". Point being, a "true" alpha wouldn't signal his arrival in such terms. He'd simply BE the man he is in his intrinsic nature, and people would FEEL that he has a certain "it factor" about him, a certain intangible charisma, a "quiet power" if you will. Of course, these too are low resolution abstractions, so by even pointing them out in writing, I'm in some sense misrepresenting the actual experience of being in the presence of an "alpha". But if we're going to have a conversation about male social status and influence, then we might need to update our terminology to avoid the unfortunate baggage attached to the low resolution images that come up when using terms like "alpha male".

The problem I have is almost every guy describes himself as alpha because he thinks thats what a real mans supposed to be. He may be 30 living at home with mummy and work as a burger flipper but he'll claim to be alpha. They have zero power in the real world so they create the disillusion by naming themselves alpha online. I was on a course for handling aggressive animals and the group was told to close their eyes before given the instruction "if your the alpha of this room stand up" every single guy stood up. The alpha bullshit is dying out because women are getting sick of it. My grandmother is more alpha than most of these wannabes.

I touch women a lot (not in "personal" areas), comment on body parts I like & rarely have any issues, only difference I find between myself & many guys who are as direct as me, is I also remember everything they tell me, if I sense they're upset am supportive, they need something they know I'm there.

What, in my experience, many men fail to realize, maybe because women don't make this clear enough, is women don't have a problem with men touching them (reasonably), or being direct on what they find attractive, what many seem to do is communicate this is all that matters to them (self-gratification).

They look at the woman like a PlayStation - something for their entertainment ("she's so hot", etc.) - with little effort to empathize (she's so hot... I'm going to tell her, not because trying to manipulate the situation (get something), but because I care about making another person happy).

Often these actions come back to the man selfishly focused on his pleasure with little (at best, nowhere near equal) concern to the other person... this has, nearly always, in my experience, been what bothers women, not a guy telling them they're attractive, or making any physical contact.

The term alpha male was coined because it was thought they resembled the alphas of a wolf pack. Who are the males who fight to become the leader who is allowed to bread, with the lead female, normally his sister, but could also be his mother or daughter. If a wolf is unseated as an alpha or loses a challenge they are banished and become lone wolves. Also a stupid word when applied to humans.

So alpha males may exist in very rural areas. But our society does not work like a wolf pack and the term alpha male has no real meaning, we could just use the words we are trying to mean, like confident or driven.

Despite those words being simply labels, those labels are meant to highlight the social hierarchy of our society. The problem is that each term is so misused and misunderstood that they’ve been twisted by people who want to mask who they are. An alpha male isn’t an aggressive and violent good for nothing. A beta isn’t a weak loser. An alpha is an outgoing natural leader, a charismatic pack builder, and a charming confident man who believes in himself. Its a part of nature if you think about it. Every species has a similar concept in their groups and for each species the alpha male is decide in a different way. No, it's not. Mind you, alpha females exist as well. Just take a look at the top executives in large corporations or leaders of countries. While the word "alpha" seems to be declining in use, it does not mean that leadership is also declining. If you ever read about the "alphas" like Golda Meir, Steve Jobs, Margaret Thatcher, you will find that these people possessed the "alpha" traits. They acted when others waited for others to decide. Alpha males only exist in chimps not in humans. Sure some men can be dominating but they're not alpha technically.

The highest-ranking chimpanzee in a group is called an alpha-male. But in humans there's no such concept although we made it up this alpha bullshit just to refer a dominating men.

Years ago I bought into all this alpha vs beta crap. I had some quick wins. I was more aware of my “beta” quirks but I also got frustrated and depressed trying out on a facade all the time. Makes me overthink crap.  Putting all this effort into being one label and ignoring other labels WILL get you labeled. It will be a label you don’t want.
