Because the terms are broad and they´ve been brought into dating by pick up artists as far as I know.
The terms are social constructs that are based on a social dynamics developed from an experiment that´s said to be rebuked and is not convincing to many. Another issue is that it only gives value to the person that uses them. Like the term alpha has only worth to the person that calls themselves that way it´s a claim nothing more, there´s no value for third parties in that. The biggest problem is that there´s no clear method to determine whether someone is alpha or beta.

Because the terms are seriously misused. The self proclaimed alpha males are NOT alpha males. They are usually selfish assholes. I can't imagine a "real" alpha calling himself an alpha. He doesn't need to.

An alpha male is not a guy who fucks hundreds of chicks. An alpha is a man who gets with a woman, and sticks with her, and earns her respect. He gets married and stays married. He raises children who also respect him.

I just feel like having such terms is odd. I don't pay much attention to them though. To me alpha is just the guy who has abs & muscles, is considered hot & sexy by society standards, is dominant, and probably has had sex with lots of women (because every woman would want him). Beta males are just the average looking guys who are nice, friendly, and a gentleman. This is just my view of how they are, so understand that it might not be accurate.
