Why do boys lead girls along?

I have history with this guy and we message occasionally and have done for 4 years. I decided to take the plunge and ask him for a drink as I would regret it if I didn't. I decided to delete the message as I was embarrassed but he replied asking what did I say in my message. I laughed it off and said lets forget about it and we continued texting for a few days. He was more conversational than ever and last night we were both out in town and he asked if I fancied meeting up. He waited up for me and came to my house where we spoke for hours and had a laugh. We kissed a lot and both said it was nice to be back next to each other after so long. He kept teasing me about the date and how I deleted the message and was a coward, in a banter like way. He stayed in the morning and was acting very keen and like we were a couple. He said I was the best cuddler and kept complementing me. We had such a good time laughing and joking and flirting but since he left he has not messaged me. He has messaged in the past when he has left my house. I don't want to message again as I have messaged a few times first recently but am so confused by his behaviour as he seemed to indicate that we would see each other again and that he liked me. Any advice on this boys behaviour or is he just being a player

From the story, it sounds like you should just message him to hang out if thats what you want to do. It could be any number of things from him being nervous, to not knowing what you want or simply just being busy the last few days.
In my experience the behaviour of ‘players’ tends to be more common in women who don’t feel they can ask men out directly so feel the need to express their feelings less directly. Men on the other hand tend to be more confused and bewildered. (Generally, obviously this isn’t always the case, and I don’t know much about either of you outside of your story)
However, it sounds like you both like each-other and have chemistry, so I don’t see the benefit in not being direct about it

He’s probably just used to you initiating contact. As such, he is likely just waiting for you to message him first as usual. Message him and at some point during conversation bring it up to him and see what follows in the ensuing days.

Guys enjoy the attention they get from women just like women getting attention from men. Its also they like that someone is interested in them to make themselves feel better like women do too. But I would talk to him in general what is he looking for, how he feels about you, and where this leading. I would do this in person just to see how he reacts and read his body signals when you talk about it. Actions speak louder than words. If he does not want to talk about it and gets weirded out by it, would say just leave and move on.
