Why are guys afraid of commitment?

Seriously it seems like after commitment settles in, guys start drifting away or they want to be single again after some time. Why do guys seem to fear commitment?

They don't wanna get hurt

2 reasons. Either 1. It's the type of guys you're choosing. That's not their fault it's yours. Stop choosing non committal guys. 2. You're not giving them enough reason to commit. Based on your description I'd guess it's the former rather than the latter.
You're almost 30. Take it from someone who's 50% older than you as people get older they have more and more baggage. People will read one line and think they've read the entire book before if you seem too familiar to a past ex in any way lol.
You can make a mistake at 18. At 30 or more committing to the wrong person can be very costly.

I don't want to be this way but based on 46 of living. A woman has to be consistent for a really long time for me to trust her.

Well I am not sure about other guys but I am not afraid of commitment.
Maybe some guys are either players, want sex, or not serious about you :)

A guy would commit to a girl is she is commitment material. not someone with a high body count that does hook ups. Marriage is seen as a trap these days as well.

Men have a lot more to lose when long term relationships and/or marriages don’t work out. Women initiate most break ups and divorces. They are more demanding.

Here are the reasons:

1) Men generally put in a lot more effort into the earlier stages of dating. We are expected to have courage, patience, game, at least some money, etc.

Women really take this for granted but this is a lot more difficult than you think. If we commit to one girl and then it doesn’t work out it’s not fun going through all this crap again.

2. When men say “I love you” it’s not just a reflection of our emotion. It’s something deeper: it’s a pledge of loyalty.

There are several reasons why men have a harder time saying this: 1) If the woman doesn’t feel the same way it can disgust even scare her off 2) Men don’t want to look weak/effeminate 3) if a break up happens it’s especially painful after saying this. Man was very vulnerable.

3) Break ups actually impact men more drastically than women. We don’t have the luxury to “cry it out”. We don’t have the luxury to get angry and “express our emotions” vs. how some women act. We look like bitches if we act visibly heartbroken. Also society always seems to make the guy out to be the bad guy in a break up.
