I personally would take it as a sign he wants to hide something from you. Otherwise why suddenly delete most of his texts? And most sounds like a lot. Since he did delete them you don't know what he wants to hide but I don't see that as a good sign. Sure maybe he wanted to avoid out of context messages but that just means he would rather hide things that he thinks could lead to fights then be honest and talk to you about them. Also not a good sign if you value communication in a relationship.

That is one of the worst things a couple can do.

it shows a complete lack of trust.

Chances are he is not, he may have simply deleted the odd messages, I do it with WhatsApp stuff all the time.

You need to ask him, however you will likely not be together long if your first thoughts are to read personal texts and then assume cheating,
