It's not just women. Most humans react in similar ways.
People are drawn to beauty, youthfulness, symmetry, and overall good health in others.
Cruel people are cruel people. Just throw out their opinions, try not to get stuck investing anything in them.

In my case it was somewhat the opposite - people criticized me for being fat, and when I lost weight, they said I had become anorexic. The only one who was always supportive was my wife, she liked when I was fat and she likes me too now.
So bottom line, don't care too much about other people's opinions. What matters is that you are comfortable in your body and that the people around you truly care for you no matter the weight or appearance.
