Why some people are having a crush for many years?

I was wondering, why do some people are so into their crushes that they cannot forget them and they are basically obsessing over them for years?

This is me. I’ve had a crush on an off on a guy for over 5 years, and when he came over our house I totally avoided him cause…he had asked out another girl instead of me…over 3 years ago…even though he broke up with her.

Granted, he probably isn’t interested in me at all, and I’ve barely ever talked to him ever. It’s incredibly frustrating that I get so nervous when he’s around…for no reason other than he’s really attractive, muscular, confident, and has his own business and hasn’t gone for any girls in over 3 years. To me, that’s impressive. However, what’s not impressive is I turned into a blubbering idiot when he came up to the cash register and I made a blubbering fool out of myself. I don’t know if he thought it was cute or not but that was the real me.

I need help. I’m 26 and I need to get over him, or I will forever be alone and not find anyone.
