Men that conceal dates?

I matched with this guy online, and he asked for my number and we set up a date for a Monday night. We also followed each other on social media. He never texted me to confirm the date, so the night before the date I messaged him asking if we were still meeting the next day. He responded immediately and said he was no longer free that night. My question is, could he have lost interest that quickly? Why would he ask for my number but never reach out?
