Am I a space holder?

I met him almost 4 years ago, shortly after I moved a couple hours away. He found himself in a relationship and we just stopped talking for about a year. He tried reaching out a few times but only one of them we actually talked for a couple hours. We became close friends again after they broke up which was awesome. There have been a few times where he has randomly messaged me how important I am to him but that’s just kind of where it stops. There’s no further conversation about it even tho he already knows how I feel about him. He’s a good looking overall really great guy so I know he wouldn’t have trouble finding someone where he’s living but then he’s here still talking to me like we did when we first met. I’m torn between him actually having those real feelings for me or if I’m just filling a spot for someone else.

I went through the same thing from 2016 to earlier this year, I’m in one state he’s in another. We didn’t talk for a little over a year when he got a girlfriend and when they broke up he came back around and as you said, it was great. I finally let him go earlier this year a few months after I got into a relationship (this is my first real one) and I did this because I know ultimately it’s not going anywhere, and that might be the case for you. Not because you two don’t care about each other but I mean after several years of repetition and no real movement or progression you realize you’re holding onto a pipe dream.
