What should I do about this guy?

So there's this guy in interested in and I had a suspicion that they had a crush on someone else but they've been showing me a lot of attention and strong eye contact so I decided to ask them out anyway. They said they were interested in someone else and that there might be another time (that they'd want to go out). So what should I do? It seems kinda like I'm a backup plan but they also seem attracted to me so I'm not sure if I should run in the opposite direction or what.
