Should I ask him if he is in a relationship?

Before I elaborate my question PLEASE don't judge me. I'm actually a bit younger than my age you see here. And more importantly, even though I am 30+ years old, I've had only one relationship which lasted less than a month (it was even a secret relationship). My society is very conservative (easy to guess) so I still consider myself inexperienced with guys and relationships.

Back to the question; I've been texting a guy for almost 2 years but we've never met, and we've never talked about our relationships! We just have things we're both interested in. Even though he's never asked to meet me in person sometimes I feel he likes me. But I can't tell for sure. He rarely starts the conversations but sometimes he sends me cute (and maybe flirty?) messages that make me smile. I'm not sure whether he likes me, or he just enjoys having another girl's attention, or he is just careful like me, or something else. I feel he is indirect in the way he flirts (if that makes sense). I will not deny that I'm desperate for love but I also try to be careful.

Today I thought maybe I should ask him if he is already in a relationship. Do you think I should do that? I keep telling myself that I won't lose anything if I asked him but I'm still hesitant.
