I told him about something that hurt my feelings he had said. He got angry and eventually said he didn’t want to talk anymore. We are expecting a baby this January

You decided to have a baby together, and it's his decision too as he would be the father. It's too late for abortion now, so you both have to take the responsibility to give this baby a good childhood.
Most psychological, behavioural and personality problems, bad values and morals, bad habits of an adult person, tendency to do crime etc, come entirely from bad parenting during the early childhood. If you don't provide the baby a correct, safe and nurturing environment, you both will be responsible for shaping their future in a bad way. The baby shouldn't assist to you two arguing, violent reactions, impulsive reactions, scary yelling, etc, but needs a safe presence of both parents.
Your boyfriend must take the responsibility he got by deciding to have a baby with you 7 months ago. You both should heavily work on your communication and relationship skills, perhaps going to couple therapy, parenthood therapy, on time. You both have to work on yourselves with willpower and probably external help too to make it work, learning techniques, before the baby is born.
But, if this man is actually psychologically abusive, impulsive (as he sounds), immature, dangerous and can't provide a decent parenthood, then you should retreat and keep your baby safe from this problematic father, if you can afford raising the baby alone. That way you should get back in contact with your family and seek for help regarding managing the baby while you work, or during emergencies (covering most of what you can't totally do alone, that a partner should do instead).
At this point the subject is the baby, and you should take decisions based on what is best for the baby. You both, or you alone if he doesn't cooperate in a healthy way (leaving him).

don't message him which can make his mood worse but give him space but if you hear nothing from him after 6 days send him a simple text like "i just wanted to say hi, hope all is well" and leave it at that
