Honestly, I think for me it was a reason to be accepted, or 'popular'. In high school, I really cared about trying to be 'hot' so that I would be accepted by a certain crowd. They were always having fun, hanging out, and I liked their energy (but they only seemed to care about how hot you were... which is where the problem with them lied. But of course, being an impressionable teenager, I didn't recognize that 'til later).

I dont care about being hot anymore, there are better and more important things to care about. However, I do care about my health, and still being 'presentable' (showering, eating well, etc.) whether that makes me hot or not, is up to others.

With time I learned that its nobody's business how I live. However, if I did want to work in a field such as fashion, modeling, or a career where looks matter, thats different.

I want to be hot because I want to be attractive to the guy who wants me. And I mean not in a meat market sense but in the he likes my personality and everything about me he likes and loves.

Being loved is so attractive and it makes you feel good. Naturally you want look good for the person you're with.
Some men vocalise a preference for the natural look, if you were lots of makeup sometimes you do tone it down especially if you see that he likes you regardless.
Women that say they don't do things to please their man lie.
We all want to maintain an attraction to the person we are with but most importantly it must be in line with what we are prepared to do.

In general, we all like to attract the opposite sex, and for women a successful strategy has always been to appear attractive superficially, showing signs of fertility and vitality.

Part of it is also nurture, as we are socialized to feel like getting a husband is everything and if you don't have one then you can't be a successful or respectable women. It's taught in society, it's taught by the media. We are taught that beauty not only is associated with things like fertility but also intelligence, purity, etc. Think of Disney, the processes are beautiful and the villains are ugly.

Like many other things in human psychology, this is, in conclusion, a mix of nature and nurture. Life becomes a lot better when you realize it's not about attracting a lot of men but rather finding the one who is for you, and to do that you have to be authentically yourself.

After that comes popularity and a larger pool of mates to choose from. Guys do the same thing.

Problem with this poll, is it assumes only one motive. Girls aren't a monolith, and there's often more than one motive in play. Sure, some are all about money. Others are all about sex. Some are all about vanity. Others simply realize their given potential, and don't wish to squander it. And some value all or a mix of the above.
