That wouldn't work for me at all. Enjoying tasty alcoholic drinks from time to time is fine. But I wouldn't be with someone who had a substance abuse problem.

I had a girlfriend who was a recovering (recovered) alcoholic. Her childhood had been a nightmare and she was a mess for several years. But, by the time I met her when she was 30, she was an amazing woman.

The fact that someone is an alcoholic didn't bother me, as long as they have their life under control and no longer drink.

In the past, it wouldn't have been a strict dealbreaker; people can grow, change, and mature. I would have told her that for her own good, she'd need to get her drinking under control. That would be the first concern. Then I would have to have wondered what effect it would have had on her job, on her friendships, and on her relationship with me.

Fortunately, my wife has never been much of a drinker, so we never had to have that conversation.

It's one thing to enjoy it, it's another to be addicted and have health complications because of it. For me, it would be a deal breaker.
