You can't fix or even help someone with addiction issues if they don't want to get clean and sober themselves. It can be a hard pill to swallow. But I learned that with my last girlfriend. She was in her late 20's and already having serious liver issues. I offered her as much help as I could and she never took it. Simply because for her own reasons she didn't want to get sober. So I have no choice but to leave her and cut off all contact. Because I didn't want to be around when her addiction killed her.

Being in a relationship with one will be hard. Because eventually he'll choose the bottle over you. But, it might be something that you have to experience it for yourself.
Your friends are right. But it's OK, some people have to learn the hard way. And some people can be functional alcoholics. Maybe you'll get lucky.
