Why didn’t he want to talk to me, is this rude of him?

I wanted to talk via phone to this guy I’m friendly with, I like him and I said to him are you free to talk? And he said ‘not now, I’ll let you know sometime soon’…I was a bit taken back and I think it’s a bit rude of him. I didn’t respond and I get he’s busy etc but still, why couldn’t he spare a minute to talk to me?

That isn't one bit rude. You asked him a question that included "no" as an answer. He gave you an answer. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't make it rude.

Have you talked before? If so, then trust him. If you haven't talked before, then give it a day or two and nicely ask if he's interested in a call.
