I suspect that it is an exaggeration, however I agree with the idea to which it points. Most women look at a limited proportion of men, that is well known. The times that I was in a relationship, I noticed that many women paid attention to me or flirted with me, even knowing that I had a partner. The times when you are single, women tend to see you differently.
It still depends a lot on society, perhaps China is much more equal in that, due to the one-child measure that lasted so long. And there are societies where it seems that the stratification of men is stronger.
