How does a guy like me end up in this situation?

I am 28, turning 29 later this year, and I never had a real girlfriend. I haven't even so much touched a woman in almost 8 years. The last few dates I have had (one girl was 18; the other 17) rejected me almost instantly upon meeting me in person. I make good money, have a good job, and striving to become more independent. What is the big deal?
