It depends on your level of engagement and familiarity with the relationship and person. If it is a date with somebody you know well but are not emotionally close to or established with, a commentary and anecdotal mode of conversation might be best for building comfort and trust. If you are with somebody who wants a quick connection, discussing relationships with family or high school friends and personal values might be ideal, if your on a date with a new face, happy ideas, and safe topics like food or job interests or museums would be ideal. Jobs might be personal, but if somebody is ashamed of their employment, then they are not ready to date or need to date people they don’t have to lie about their job prospects too.

Whatever you want to talk about on the first date. Have fun with it. Ask many questions but just don't ask like an interview. Maybe start with what do you like to do for fun and go from there.

Simple stuff to get to know each other.
Are you in school? What's your major or what do you plan to study?
If not in school, what do you do for a living right now? Do you like it? What is your dream job?
Are you originally from here?
What kinds of things to you like to do for fun? What are your hobbies or passions?

Any one of those can lead to more questions and exchanges.

Keep it light and friendly. Have a sense of humor. Don't make it an interview.
