Depends how it manifests.
But frankly I've never had a boyfriend defend me. I've been the one (smaller than my exes - I'm just short) defending us both.
The one time an ex thought he was protective, he wasn't. He was jealous.
I am perfectly capable of protecting myself, but a strong and reassuring presence is always welcome. They're just rare because most men think macho bluster is better than actual skill.

Overprotective people tend to be paranoid for the smallest things. It'd stress me out too so I'd have to tell him to back off.
