That's rough. I also think it depends on the person. Some people can move on from that and some can't.

My personal opinion is as long as they RESPECT you. Nothing has to change. I can accept a woman rejecting me unless she treats me as though she's above me afterwards. I've taken rejection from women before and then had to end the friendship because after year she had to keep bringing it up. As though she were a prize I didn't get to have. I had to tell her. The only thing that made her a prize was the mutual respect we had before.
