I personally distance myself from my boyfriend when I’m overwhelmed with stress, I’d need some space to myself to process things. A lot of guys seems to be the same way as well. There’s a lot of reasons as to why someone might turn distant, doesn’t always mean that they’re cheating.

Also that's a separate question.
She might not have put in any effort making him believe that she is not into a long term relationship or she might be a side chick or he may have lost interest or he has just a hard time otherwise, etc.
You can't really expect other people to give you a answer based on two data points only.
